Wheeler Mica Mines Quick Info
This is a quick guide to visiting the Wheeler Mica Mines.
The Wheeler Brothers welcome both the experienced "rock hound' and especially the novice and new digger providing tools and guidance on their visit .
We are open Thursday, Friday,Saturday and Sunday ,by scheduled appointments. We do not schedule "day of visits."
To schedule a visit go to our How To Schedule A Visit page on this website, please fill out the page info and we will respond via return email. In particular please choose a date you would like to visit and the number of people in your group.
The day of your visit we request that you meet us in our parking area at 9 A.M. Please be on time as other visitors may be waiting. If you Google Mine Road Bethel, Maine it will direct you to our road.
We only offer one tour per day. The tour includes a narrative on the history of the mines, information about mica and its processing and uses, what kind of minerals you may find. A visit to the No.1 mine for an explanation of mica mining and other anecdotal information. We then travel to the No,2 mine for additional information about the mines. The length of this portion of the tour takes between 1 and 1 1/2 hours depending on group size and the number of questions.
After the history and mine viewing we will take you to the mine tailings and provide you with the tools and guidance on searching for mineral specimens. We have a unique system using on site water for making your search for minerals easier and fun. You may choose to dig as long or as little as you desire.
For the experienced digger who just wants to dig, the tour is optional.
We do our best to provide transportation up the mountain to the mines but on occasion due to the number of visitors we are unable to accommodate everyone. f you have a four wheel drive or an all wheel drive with good clearance you are welcome to drive your own vehicle up. And if you enjoy a walk you are welcome to do that as well.
Maine weather can be unpredictable if the day of your visit looks like it is going to be unpleasant we will contact you, we reserve the option of canceling visits based on weather conditions. And if your plans change we would truly appreciate an email letting us know.
Fees for the visit are on the All Day Rock Hounding and Our Guided Mine Tour pages
